Lanoue families are first recorded in France in 1223 A.D. when Ducoq's "Anciennes Familles de France" state that George Lannoue was the owner of a Château near Strasbourg at that date, and was Governor of the area. The next record we find is of Eduard de Lannou, who is listed in the French Land Rolls as owning a measure of land (about 120 acres) at Sevres in Paris in 1375 A.D. In the 1200-1300 period , Jenri Lanou is shown as owning 14 acres at Gien in 1272 in the Department of Loiret; Pierre Lanoue owned 24 acres at Moulin in central France en 1280. In the 1300-1450 period two Lanoue landowners were Jules Lanoue of Hennebont in Brittany, and Charles Lanoue of Chartres. Lists of Trade Guild members also give clues to the early distribution of families. An examination of the Paris city guilds of 1486 shows:- Jean Lanoue, Master of the Goldsmiths Guild; Georges Lanoue, Master of the Glovers Guild. At St. Germain, near Paris, Gaston Lanoue built a Renais-sance mansion in 1524, and this building remained until demolition in 1920; here also Simon Lanoue was a prominent silk merchant. In Lyons in 1535 Trade Guild records show 16 Lanoue members in that city.

A well-know painter in Marseilles in 1545 was Raoul Lanoue, who painted portraits of the French nobi-lity and also travelled widely in Italy, Spain and the Netherlands. Genealogical Guilds for the 1500-1650 period in France give landowning Lanoue branches as: André Lanoue 25 acres at Doubs, 1524; Michel Lanoue, 32 acres at Arles, 1546; Louis Lanoue, 34 acres at Tournus, 1570; Paul Lanoue 35 acres at Bordeaux,1630; Charles Lanoue, 36 acres at Dijon, 1644. In 1715 the largest Lanoue land owner was Albert Lanoue, Comte de Vincennes, who two châteaux with vineyards. The French Military records of 1720 show that General Jean Lanoue was Comman-dant of the Paris garrison and on the field had gained two victories in Germany; 8 Lanoue officers are also mentioned in these lists. French Army Lists of 1870 record 9 Lanoue officers. The 1875 Paris Census gives an approximate total of 24 Lanoue households. Ships Lists of French Ports give 18 Lanoue emigrants to U.S.A and Canada between 1840 and 1865. This individually written family history Has been photographed and Registered ARCHIVE NO.
